Being a trip longer than a long weekend I think this qualifies.<br /><br />The riding was, as ever, great - unfortunately, and a bit predictably, the weather was not so good.<br /><br />We rode the Twrch Trail at Cwmcarn - a nice 18km (with 300m climbing) - and as a place to start was logical as it is quite close to the Severn Crossing. A nice trail - but with most of the climbing straight out of the car park it meant that after being in the car for three hours it took a while to get in to it. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.mbwales.com/en/content/cms/centres/cwmcarn/cwmcarn.aspx">http://www.mbwales.com/en/content/cms/centres/cwmcarn/cwmcarn.aspx</a><br /><br />Then we went to Afan and rode two trails on two separate days. The first was the Penhydd Trail - 17km and 550m climbing - and then Whites Level - again 17km long and another 550m of climbing.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.mbwales.com/en/content/cms/centres/afan_forest_park/afan_forest_park.aspx">http://www.mbwales.com/en/content/cms/centres/afan_forest_park/afan_forest_park.aspx</a><br /><br />At Afan the weather when we rode the Penhydd was shocking - really heavy rain for the entire ride, and this made it far more technical than it would be in the dry. No major problems other than I slipped out on a switch back section in the woods and slowly fell off the trail and into the tree line. No damage done.<br /><br />We did have to wade across the stream at the end - which had become flooded - well over Kelly’s knees - mid shin for me - but it by the end it was pretty clear that we were going to drink tea for the rest of the day.<br /><br />Whites Level is a good challenge - it starts with a 6km switchback climb up a goat track - which is a little technical in places - and then it is essentially a ton of singletrack down into the valley you started in. On the way up the valley (very near the top) Kelly slipped off the trail and fell about 10 - 15 ft down the side of the very steep valley side. Luckily she landed in some flowers and was completely fine………………<br /><br />I was led to believe the decent was more technical - but Kelly and I absolutely bossed the decent and had a great laugh. I can not keep up with Kelly on the downhill sections - she is just too fast - it just seems to be when she is travelling slowly that we have any drama. See below.<br /><br />At the very end - I would say within 1KM of the finish, in sight of the end, almost on the flat Kelly went over her handlebars rolling over a small low natural stone step (slow motion and not as bad as her earlier stunt) and I managed to rip off my front mech on a rock (Not sure how the laws of physics allowed for this).<br /><br />Luckily there is a bike shop at the trail head - and they sold and fitted a new mech for me whilst we had a huge lunch in the drop off Café.<br /><br />The last ride we had was on Saturday - on the way back from Wales we stopped in on my mum and dad and had a ride over Exmoor. The weather has been okay - which is a key factor, as since I have moved house the ride to work is about 14 miles door to door. </div><br /><div></div><br /><div>The big change this year is that my commute route now has hills - as moving house means a flat route into work is not an option. I say hills - if you can count Surbiton Hill and Kingston Hill as hills and the long drag up the A3 as a climb. And I am back to raise some money.<br /><br />Rather like last year I thought I would motivate myself to do some training through keeping the training details and commitments in a blog. And so that anyone giving who chooses to donate to this worthy cause through my ‘Just Giving page’ can keep abreast of matters.<br /><br />I hope you can hear my virtual tin rattling - I want your money.<br /><br />Since I last updated the blog there has been quite a lot going on - and I have had some enforced time off the bike. Log story short - Kelly and I entered the UK Single speed Mountain Bike Championships in early June and since then I have had four weeks out with a back injury that has kept me pretty much grounded. Boo.<br /><br />As the BHF ride is in mid September - and as I now feel like I can peddle again, I need to get on with the business of putting in a few miles. My initial thoughts are that unlike last year when I was pretty fit and I needed to get fitter to complete the ride - this year I am not fit and I need to get in the Zone and work up to some level of fitness first - before kicking on and upping the intensity. Again - boo.<br /><br />Yesterday was step one - I managed 20 miles on a combination of tow path and road. Light gears and a latte stop (reward for getting out with a sore back).<br /><br />I certainly need to target a few road miles this week to loosen everything up - and then think about heading into the woods next week. </div>GuyCycleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17355291074604401455noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-707260658308091370.post-41854925642478494112009-02-24T08:54:00.001-08:002009-02-24T08:57:35.122-08:00If I had a hammerHad an interesting couple of rides last week.<br /><br />On the Friday night H and I did a night ride after work.<br /><br />We circuitously went up to Wimbledon Common from Southwark and then rode across the common and into Richmond Park.<br /><br />I got to try out my new fenix torches – and I had planned to run two in series. No chance – one was bright enough! In fact H had my set of BLT halogens – which with two 10w bulbs in series was maybe 50 – 60% less bright – or dimmer, which might be putting it more correctly.<br /><br />The halogens throw a bright light with a yellow tinge – making the night warm up in front of you. The Fenix casts clear cold bright white light. No arc of light with a fuzzy edge – but a super strong beam of clarity. I was really impressed. Two torches would be for extreme conditions or technical difficulty – so I recon I will carry one as back up. The other thing I noticed was that the distance of trail you could light up and ride effectively was in the region of 15 meters. For anyone who has seriously ridden at night this is a revelation given the budget nature of the set up.<br /><br />As for the ride – well once in Richmond Park we were asked to leave by Rangers in a 4x4. I was going to challenge the ranger as you can cycle at night after the main gates shut – when the Ranger kindly pointed out that the deer cull was on. Exit stage right.<br /><br />Once out of the park via the Sheen Gate, we headed through Mortlake and onto the Thames Path by the Brewery. We then rode to the White Cross at Richmond where as the frost came down we had a pint in the deserted beer terrace.<br /><br />I think H enjoyed his first night ride (I suspect a new torch is now on its way) – and I had to stop for chips on the way home.<br /><br />On Sunday there was a bit of group ride on.<br /><br />Hayden, EK, Kelly and I did a spot of time in the Surrey Hills. We met up at Guildford Station and after patching H’s camel back with a Park Tools Patch to stop him leaking across Surrey, we met EK on the SantSchmooze. This is the first time I have seen EK on a bike since his Pitch got stolen – and the Santa Cruz is nice. Very. And as H advised me in advanced it is very bling.<br /><br />We went off to the Pilgrims way – then around St Martha’s hill and onto the path that grinds up to Farley. That got everyone warmed up. We then went to Peaslake via ‘Bull Corner’, ‘Tramps’, the bottom of Hurtwood Control and then the ‘Car Parks’ section.<br /><br />Lots of water about – and a little mud, but a fun blast. I did have another puncture (almost none last year and now two in three rides) and we (well I) had a bit of a faff getting myself back together again.<br /><br />At the tea stop we decided to ride Pitch Hill and then finish on Barry Knows Best, before turning for home. That was deemed a good plan and cracking on we climbed the lane– went past the reservoir and pushed onto the hill fort.<br /><br />After customary stop to take in the view H and I got EK and Kelly to session a small drop off and roll out. The thinking here was for everyone to get their eyes in so we could push a few things later on……….<br /><br />We then rode the new section of the Yoghurt Pots (nice) and Telegraph Road – okay. On the way back H, EK and I rode Lost Pickup. I love this steep off camber trail – and I felt I rode this really well given how slippy it was.<br /><br />We then climbed back up to the fort and headed for BKB.<br /><br />Kelly had already decided she wanted to session the steep roll off / drop near the start – a spot where she has been blocked before – so I agreed to go with her and spot it for her. I think Kelly nailed it on her second attempt (nice). EK had a couple of false starts and then got it together - and Hayden I think had one false start before dominating it. Modestly, if I say so myself, this obstacle has never been an issue for me – so I went back a bit on the trail so I could flow into it and then push on.<br /><br />Whilst everyone else was having a go on the roll off, Kelly pushed on. EK followed me down – the idea being I would spot him through the last turn into the scree that leads to the road. However, Emile got a bit of a burn right before the end when he offed after a set off-camber roots meant he slipped off the trail on a high line and on to the low route via his backside (as told by Hayden). Sore in the morning I think.<br /><br />We then had a second tea in Peaslake, and then pretty much re-traced our steps back to Guildford – arriving just as the rain started.<br /><br />I had a great time – and working the Commencal in the woods, over roots and off the odd drop was what I needed for brain space.<br /><br />I have also made a note to check the pressure in both shocks as I bottomed out a couple of times on Telegraph Road when I was pushing it. I don’t think any damage was done. However Kelly’s bike has also started the ‘bushing knock’ – which is a bit of a costly replacement part scenario. So this is perhaps more grist to her burley bike mill. I fear six inches of travel and full face protection are on the way.<br /><br />I might push for a Swinley ride on Sunday - so I can cram more drops and steep stuff into a ride than usual. I feel that I want a bit more adversity to control next time I ride. Not sure why. Busy at work - and I have had far less time on the bike than I would have liked over January and early Feb.<br /><br />I did manage a great ride the other week with Hayden and Kelly at Swinley - where I managed to find most of what I had been shown on the guided ride. The spot I could not find was called the cork screw. Never mind - I think I can find it if I go straight there the next time. So that will be the order of things the next time we head to the lookout.<br /><br />We did ride Alpine - and I got a flat - the first of the year. My fingers froze whilst putting in a new inner tube and I needed Hayden's monster thumbs to get the 2.35 High roller back on the rim.<br /><br />We did also stop to session some steep cut drops in a bit of the forest we normally ride straight past. Hayden got his flow on and Kelly dropped a few and swooped a few new obstacles. So all in we felt good. A sign of technical progress is that Kelly has mooted the idea of getting a burlier bike. Double good idea if we go to the alps for some testing........<br /><br />The snow last week was a massive diversion - and I only went out with the Cross-country ski poles on the Monday night. I trekked through Bushy - well off the paths and into where the snow had fallen and was undisturbed (up to a foot deep). Very quiet. Very nice. It reminded me of Sweden.<br /><br />Back to the weekend just gone - Sunday was a blow out. Kelly runs Avid J3's - and the rear pad had disintegrated (that will be the origin of last week's squeaky noises). We could not find a place that was either open or sold Avid parts - so the ride was eventually kicked into touch.<br /><br />Never mind - my new Fenix halogen torches have showed up.<br /><br />They are so bright that night riding is back on the menu. I need now to cobble a fixing mount together. Non standard as bike lights go - but in the garden one torch lights up the flats 30meters away in full beam. I purchased two to use in series, so I am not coming off again at speed on the rooty bit at the back of Wimbledon Common.<br /><br />I just need to make sure that the lights are not so bright that they blind the joggers - this happened with the BLT halogen set that I boosted with an extra 10w bulb in the second lamp. Everyone has a right to enjoy the quiet of the night - and unhappy joggers and runners fall into that space as well.<br /><br />The other thing that is of note is that the BLT set have a massive lead acid battery that requires a frame mounted pouch - whilst the P7s require two NIMH AA batteries per light and they are brighter with LEDs compared to the BLTS halogens.<br /><br />I appreciate that. Long story short about fifty people met up in the car park - and we split into five ability groups.<br /><br />I backed myself and joined the fast group (only four riders) - and as three of us were on singlespeeds I thought the pace would be manageable. I did manage to keep pace but I faded a bit near the end. But being guided around the forest was a first - and although we rode some trails I knew (sometimes back to front to the way I normally ride them) I was taken to some new spots, which if I can remember how to get to them, will be fun to ride when the weather gets warmer.<br /><br />There were two strange things about the ride.<br /><br />Firstly - people who live in forums have aliases,so half the chat and social side of the ride was people introducing themselves twice - 'I am blah my forum name is blah blah'. Or 'do you know who blah blah is? I think his / her real name is blah'.<br /><br />Secondly - my route map is made up of route names made up by the people I used to ride Swinley with (when I was at university in the early 90's in Reading) or that are named by me so I can remind Hayden or Kelly of the trail. It has often be the form of people I have ridden with to name a trail after an event or a landmark on the trail. Ergo at Swinley a trail we ride as Tom Sellick (so called because we saw a guy on a bike who looked like said actor) was introduced yesterday as Alpine and a trail everyone called Labyrinth we call something rather rude after an incident Jude and I had with an unpleasant man in a hurry. I think there was some confusion across all the groups caused by names, features and directions. But that's the fun of such an event.<br /><br />The two new routes I rode were called Tank Traps and Seagull - and I also learnt a great way to get across to the corkscrew by some new sections of singletrack.<br /><br />Interestingly we hardly rode any of the technical sections out near Cesar's camp - or any of the 10k circuit we normally start with.<br /><br />The other thing yesterday was the weather. When we started at 10.30 it was -7 and when we came back in at 1.15 it was -4. The water in my camelback froze - all my sweat (when I got one up) froze on my buff / helmet and my fingers and toes went totally numb.<br /><br />But it was fantastic. Crisp and clear. It briefly snowed a couple of times. The ground was frozen solid. Some routes were like rippled concrete - others skate park smooth. All good. This was a good thing as the original route was very flat – and this diversion would add a bit more to the ride and make it more of an event. This was a good place to stop for a moment, as a lot of the testosterone powered male group riders on a mission to finish in a quick time sped past.<br /><br />We then got into the diversion.<br /><br />After a wrong turn - which sent about thirty of us the wrong way in some woods near the A3 at Wisely (double back required) we hit the North Downs and a series of short technical climbs. Loose rocks and roots and some single track – and this began the sorting process for those of the 400 entrants who had done some training and those that thought they would wing it.<br /><br />Cracking on we had a good couple of down hill sections – where again regular riders were easy to spot (they rode down the obstacles - roots and drops) whilst a fair few people walked down – and I think we as a group over took quite a few people at this point.<br /><br />At Cranleigh (and our planned lunch stop at about 35 miles) the technical stuff was over. In Cranleigh Sue and Jude – our support team were in place and we filled up on various goodies from the local bakeries. Calorie dense ‘sports nutrition’ of Cornish Pasty and Jam doughnut, washed down with some form of isotonic lucozade made up lunch.<br />I think it was a good idea to stop for lunch. The sun was out and it was great to re-fuel in the sun and take stock of the morning. I think a fair few riders passed us at this point – opting for lunch on the go – or a very short stop. This gave us the advantage of much less congested tracks in the afternoon – and no pressure at any bottle necks.<br /><br />We then rode on the South Downs link – which is essentially a disused railway line that heads to the South Downs. What a way to finish rolling into Brighton.<br /><br />Joy ending realisation - the five miles before the downhill were going to be up hill. Gravity was the master at this point, as we were now all feeling the distance, and the hills from the diversion early in the ride.<br /><br />Thus the last check point was a spot to fortify oneself for the final push. Tom’s heart rate monitor was at 165 plus all the way up. I have no idea where my heart rate was at, as all I could do was peddle squares in the smallest gear. </p><p>At the top a false flat took us along to a Youth Hostel and then we had a view of the sea. In the sunset this looked quite impressive – and I wondered how many people thought he had done the whole ride like that!<br /><br />Bang on sun set we crossed the line together.<br /><br />We certainly were not the last in. But that was not the point. Money raised and great day out were the objectives and I think we more than met these.<br /><br />I got a medal. I got a t-shirt. I had fish and chips by the sea. School boy error on my part. </div><br /><div>This however has been fixed today. A trip to PC world sorted the memory (after a quick google of the part required and a bit of YouTube time watching some other people adding RAM to their PCs). On the last point which is the saddest - me writing about adding RAM to my machine - or someone filming it and posting it on you tube. Hmm.</div><br /><br /><div>So I will post twice this week to catch up.</div><br /><div>So then, Devon. Not the cycle fest I was needing and hoping for. The weather was rubbish. Mum and Dad's house was like being on a trawler in the North Sea. Horizontal rain all day and buckets of it. So I watched tonnes of cycling and Kelly and I went to Exeter for the afternoon. Oddly (and a high point of the excersion) was going into to the lobby of the bank to use the cash machine and finding the bank fully staffed and showing the Olympic 100m final on a large flat screen TV. Mr Bolt won - and I got out some beer tokens. </div><br /><div>Banks showing sport on Saturday afternoons - I have seen the future.</div><br /><div>We then went to Exmouth and watched the surfers in the huge swell - and then took in the kite surfers, which was the second high point of the day. Those guys were getting massive air in the strong winds. I was not sure how much was by design and how much was just because the wind was huge - but I'll give the guys the benefit of the doubt. Very crazy - not very cream tea.</div><br /><div>Sunday - the rain was not so heavy so we got the WINTER kit on and made a call that due to heavy rain we were best off going steep to places where the gradient will have helped drainage - and not to risk a trip out on Dartmoor at all. So we hattched a plan to go from Exford up to Dunkery Beacon then onto to Dunster then back over Dunkery.</div><br /><div>A couple of routes we had not been on before were selcted to test out, and to add on to bits we already knew - and away we went. The climb up to Dunkery was wet. The down option was on the Dunster path - fantastic and flowing - and a favourite descent. Then I got the direction right and the route wrong with a seriously steep hike a bike up onto the Macmillan way. </div><br /><div>Once on the Mac, the coast was in view and the sky cleared a bit - and we steamed into Dunster along the ridge - exiting in the Dunster grave yard. We then found a 'half way' cream tea and a peice of cake. </div><br /><div>After the intake of calorie dense sports nutrition, we then went back through the grave yard and did a hard climb out of Dunster and back onto the Mac. The pay off being a wicked plummet down the hike a bike. All very good fun - and a little sketchy.</div><div> </div><div>Then the plan was to get back over Dunkery on the Mac (on a route we spied on the map and had never tried). </div><div> </div><div>With exploration often comes drama. This route was just ridable - it was so steep and rocky it required real concentration and a few rests and some hike a bike to keep it moving. It was on this path that Kelly had a freak mechanical. </div><div> </div><div> </div><div>On a really steep section, she lost her balence and started to roll backwards. Grabbing hold of the front brake the hose pulled free under the pressure. This let air into the system and rendered the brake useless. I suspected it had something to do with the Brake service at the LBS - but it was not trail bodge situation. Kelly just had to go forth with only a rear brake.</div><div> </div><div> </div><div>We made it to the top of Dunkery just in time for the weather to close in again - and for it tip down on our final descent into Exford.</div><div> </div><div> </div><div>The bikes were so caked in sticky red mud at the end, that we had to clean them in a river before we placed them in the car. The scenery was a mixture of run down industrial, scrubbed up industrial and the spanking new. The sun was out (after a heavy rain) and it felt quite good to be running through the city in relative peace and quite. There were a few other runners about - but it was not at all busy.<br /><br />The mistake I did make is that obviously a canal is going somewhere (i.e. not in a loop) -and it took me a bit of time to think that through - i.e. I am running towards Wolverhampton and I need to turn around at some stage. Idiot.<br /><br />After I had showered, I went out for a walk in Birmingham City centre. I love the architecture – not the rubbish concrete bits – but the bits that hint to the power Birmingham once had in the global economy, through the industrial revolution and beyond. Like my extended time in Liverpool last year there is a lot to look at if you look upwards and beyond new shop and office fronts. I find city centres fascinating. When the people go home after work you have them to yourself and can walk about and nose at things that take your interest. In Birmingham’s case the past worth and value is showcased in the grandeur and opulence of the period architecture. The foyer of the Provincial Bank building is like the high and ornate ceiling of a mosque or Byzantine church. Stunning.<br /><br />The new Birmingham (that is replacing the concrete hell of the sixties and seventies) is quite spectacular – and all in all I think I walked a couple of miles before weakness took hold of me and I went for a curry.<br /><br />Off to Devon this weekend – and if the weather is good, I can see a trip up to Dunkery Beacon from Exford on Exmoor, and then another ride from Clapper Bridge up and around a chunk of Dartmoor. I also strongly advise against doing the same search using google image. Certainly do not do either at work.<br /><br />The punishment, which I deserved, and to which I elude, is a beating on the bike to make up for the lack of miles achieved last week. The lesson has been administered through time and miles on the X-bike.<br /><br />Having a Cyclo-Cross bike up your sleeve is a great trick. Obviously it is a bike – but it has an evil personality. Stiff aluminium, high bottom bracket, V-brakes and built like a road bike that has bulked up and wants a ruck. It is not forgiving in any way. I think X-bikes make great commuter bikes as they are bullet proof and you can whack them around town without fear of curbs, potholes or manhole covers.<br /><br />I therefore added to Sunday’s ride (more of that below) with a fast 15 on Monday after work (up to and around Richmond Park) and nasty 22 on Tuesday (the same as Monday but with an extra lap).<br /><br />On both days it was really windy and that made it hard work to tap out any real rhythm around the circuit. I felt suitably flogged after both rides and only working away from home and a late meeting over dinner have prevented me from putting in the same effort Wednesday and tonight (where I am in Birmingham and might go out for a run).<br /><br />There are lots of roadies in Richmond park. They make you feel a bit inadequate as they really do put the gas on. Some club riders draft in chain gangs - and when one of these gangs comes past, you get sucked along for 20 meters and it all feels very easy until you are dropped and you steadily loose speed back to the slow grind you were tapping out on your own. Miserable.<br /><br />Mind you – the looks you get from the roadies as you bimble about on the Cross are quite something. Either disproving – or there is a look that is cast your way that questions the logic of this rough looking ‘road bike’. I have been staring back with my own special look (I am pulling a face now which you can’t see), which radiates a sense of despair and sorrow for those that use lycra as a lifestyle statement and bold primal colours as a personality differentiator.<br /><br />Sunday was interesting.<br /><br />I got the commencal out of the shed and sticking out of the rear tyre sidewall like a shiny black blister was the inner tube. I must have gashed the tyre last week, and over the course of time the pressure in the tyre had forced through the sidewall. The same thing has happened to the Maxxis High Rollers that Hayden had on the Hoss, so great tyre, poor longevity.<br /><br />So as the singlespeed was out of action I had to delay the start – and get a new tyre. The LBS came good – selling me for £20 a massive Nokian 2.3. Finnish madness in rubber. This new rubber is like a tractor tyre and is really heavy weight – so this problem should be a one off.<br /><br />I fitted the tyre – promptly got a flat, and then noticed that the non drive side crank arm was loose. Poor. Very.<br /><br />No real excuses, there was a bit of mid week rain - and I lost my way a bit after work (train delays / late running meetings / pub on Friday etc) - all conspiring to make me drink tea when I got home and to head straight for the couch.<br /><br />On the plus side the fund raising is going well - and I must convert this good will and faith into effort.<br /><br />I have been weak.<br /><br />Punishment now beckons to compensate for this lapse in discipline and to help me get to the ton mileage from the end of next week. Intresting things like digital planet / from our own correspondant. I like the idea that even though I hate running (which is aledgedly good for you) - I can improve my brain at the same time as my lung function.<br /><br />But I do also listen to Russell Brand on occassion. However, recovery form the ankle injury means I need to build the mileage back up steadily and sensibly.<br /><br />Luckily I managed a flyer from work last night - so got out on the singlespeed for an hour when I got home.<br /><br />I did the Richmond Park circuit - which is 11.5 miles door to door - and at about 75 - 80% effort got around and back in 63 mins. Which is quite good.<br /><br />I keep forgetting that I am running 32/17 - which is nice on the rolling / hilly North Downs, but totally impractical for flat South West London, as I keep spinning out. A quick bodge later and all was (un) fixed - but I have stretched another chain.<br /><br />I am now questioning my adherence to thrift – i.e. fitting a cheap BMX chains – and I have thought about splashing out for a track chain (guaranteed not to stretch). This is all faff and I really could do without spending more time in the shed getting things to work.<br /><br />Brining me nicely to the repair job on Kelly’s Specialized.<br /><br />The Local Bike shop has come good again.<br /><br />They ordered the correct brake lever in a week from Avid. Evan’s would not do this favouring to sell us new brakes. So that’s a winner – proving again that service at Evan’s is patchy at best.<br /><br />The LBS has agreed to fit the lever and trim the brake hoses for £30. The lever cost £20. All in £50 – which is still £20 cheaper than buying a new brake set. The fixing cost seemed a little steep – but there is not going to be any margin on a £20 lever – and I was sure to bungle bleeding the brakes and trimming the hoses.<br /><br />Considering the comparative damage to both the metal and Kelly’s face from THAT fall in Scotland – I will be very glad to get the bike fixed and safe to ride again. Brakes are important, and me not fixing them on the cheap is the best move. Peace of mind is required.<br /><br />Hayden blew out on Sunday's ride on the North Downs (drinking related rain check) – so I went for a run instead. The ankle is still sore and very stiff – and running was a bit of struggle. James thinks that I will be able to run a bit more freely in a week or so if I keep up the exercises. Anyhow the 'team' by the time I left work was Tom (racing snake), Hayden (I think I have broken it), Kelly (heart rate now at 210) and myself.<br /><br />I will check with Hayden to see if Ruth and Pickup got their entries in. If so, that is quite a number and will make for a great time.<br /><br />So that's part one completed.<br /><br />Now for the next bit - which is fund raising. Which will be okay – except that this means forgoing some cycling this weekend.<br /><br />The ankle is feeling much better (80%) - so I had quite fancied the idea of a few hilly miles in the North Downs – especially as it has not rained this week and it will have dried out into a whippy and fast set of trails on and around Leith Hill.<br /><br />I’m sure Hayden will eat my share of pastry products in the Peaslake bus shelter – and give Barry Knows Best a beating.<br /><br />Never mind.<br /><br />The plus side is that after the Christening we will go to Bath and see my brother (a rare event) and Lee is in town - and by coincidence he will also be decamping to Bath for the weekend. Kelly and I also want to catch up with Jo and Paul – and have a coo over the baby, who looks very cute in the photos Paul has sent on email. I think the last time we saw Jo and Paul was before Christmas –which included bump starting their car outside the wine factory.<br /><br />On the Lee front, the BMW finally left our care yesterday. A contractor I know agreed to take it away and deliver it to the dealership I agreed the sale with, which is based in Chichester.<br /><br />Even to the end that car proved to be trouble.<br /><br />The battery was flat again and the contractor’s booster pack would not jump it from the points in the front. So we un-hinged the tray in the boot and tried to jump direct to the battery (little known fact - BMW batteries are under the back seat and you can’t get to them – so there is a jump point in the boot).<br /><br />It was at this point that I noticed the spare wheel and the BMW tool kit had been removed.<br /><br />Lee assures me these items were with the vehicle. Ergo when we replaced the tyres last year and / or had the MOT they were pinched. We never thought to look when we got the car back – so that’s another lesson learnt.<br /><br />It has been really hard to get that car sold. The average private sale price for a 323 CI has plunged in these credit-crunching times to £2,600 – so the price I managed to get for Lee was a result. As was finding two Baby Bell cheeses in the ashtray and a t-shirt in the glove box.<br /><br />The other thing to remember is that if you don’t drive a car very often, and it has a car alarm, there is a very good chance the alarm will drain your battery. Encouraged by my nurofen powered trial on Saturday (to the shops and back on the singlespeed) I took the plunge and arranged a quick one in Swinley with Hayden.<br /><br />Southwest Trains usual habit of making straightforward journeys less so meant Kelly and I had to go via Wimbledon - which is not a cycle friendly station. Met Hayden and Jude on the train and away we went to Martin's Heron via Virginia water twice (mad signal issue and reversing the train to change direction).<br /><br />Anyway - got into Swinley and we basically rode the best bits of single track we could string together in a two hour loop after a quick warm up.<br /><br />The place had drained well - and there were not too many other people out and about.<br /><br />Except for The Stig.<br /><br />At the top of the Jump spot was a guy dressed in full body armour, full face helmet and ski goggles astride some monster DH bike. He just stood there. Motionless. Visualising his run. He looked a bit ridiculous. After all this is Swinley. Berkshire. Not a well regarded alpine freeride venue involving ski lifts.<br /><br />Anyway he did not give it a go when we were there - so we moved on.<br /><br />I am all for people giving it a go - and saftey is a must - but I did wonder on my way home if that guy was enjoying himself. He was tooled up for more than Swinley could throw at him. I had the thought that with a reasonable travel bike, and bit less armour he could have moved freely around the woods and riden loads of drops, switchbacks, jumps and general woodland nuttyness. Roots and steepness prevail in the forest - and although that's not everyone's thing - it's the thing Swinley is best at producing a grin on.<br /><br />When we went to the Quashqui challenge there were lads (all be it pro) going nuts over the jumps in jeans and a helmet. Serious injury possibility - 30 foot drop in and huge gaps. Massive annoyance in that I am not getting the best of the summer nights.<br /><br />Some <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">consolation</span> has been the rain.<br /><br />Cycling in the rain in the winter is okay, as well it's the winter. Summer cycling in the rain just sucks. It's the summer. You are suposed to be able to knock the dust off your bike after a ride - a bit of lube - then chuck everything in the shed until next time. Not so in the rain. And it has been raining hard. So it has been no great hardship watching the Tour De France in the dry of the living room.<br /><br />With that in mind I am going to aim to get out on Sunday (irrespective of the weather forecast). Swinley is the best bet as it drains well, so there is a good chance of not coming back with a sore ankle and caked in mud. Just likely a sore ankle.<br /><br />Who am I kidding - I am itching to get out on the bike - rain or no rain. I've got to get out of town and into the trees. I'll freewheel if I have to - or only peddle with my right foot.......<br /><br />I got an update email from the BHF off road LDN to B'ton ride, informing me that registration will open on Friday the 18th July - but that the ride is limited to 400 places. Kelly, Hayden, Ruth and Tom (plus AN Other) have also indicated they are up for the challenge.<br /><br />The best bit is that I think it is going to start in Richmond Park.<br /><br />So I am guessing the first bit will be towpath to Walton / Weybridge, then the Wey Navigation Canal to Guildford.
